McALLEN, Texas— Sports Destination Management has recognized PONY International Softball World Series at McAllen last summer as the 2022 Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism.

The five-day Protect Our Nation’s Youth (PONY) softball tournament brought together over 40 international teams from Mexico and the Czech Republic in July. More than 900 athletes participated resulting in a $1.3 million economic impact for the City of McAllen.

Sports Destination Management is the highest circulating publication by sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market. Those who were recognized as 2022 Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism contributed over $2.42 billion to the national economy last year.

Visit McAllen, McAllen Boys & Girls Club, McAllen Parks & Recreation and McAllen City Hotel Partners have worked together to bring this international tournament to the city.

Tourism Director Alex Arevalo spoke about town twinning to host events of this caliber.

“We are so fortunate to live and work in a city like McAllen, where the efforts of our industry partners can be leveraged to make such achievements possible for our community,” she said. “We greatly value the relationships we have with partner companies. It takes a lot of teamwork to host events of this caliber. Our Sports Sales Manager, Julian Gutierrez, has done a fantastic job in ensuring we deliver quality experiences for tournament organizers and by applying for this recognition has allowed us to continue to spread the word of our city’s ability to deliver host world-class tournaments.”

McAllen Chamber President and CEO Josh Mejia also spoke about the recognition.

“These awards always reflect our collective efforts to raise the standard of our operations in McAllen, Texas. Special thanks to all partners involved in making our city a tourist destination.”

The PONY International Softball World Series has agreed to host a follow-up tournament in McAllen featuring teams from the United States and Mexico, with the possibility of hosting teams from Australia, Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic and even Japan.
