If you’re loyal to certain airlines, you should also consider their cards, pros say. Airline credit card sign-up bonuses are often enticing and usually come with a significant amount of bonus miles that have significant value when converted into airfare. In addition, customers with certain cards can redeem awards with partner airlines, which can be helpful depending on the flight destination.

While hotel and airline specific cards can be great, many people don’t want to be tied to just one airline or hotel. For these folks, pros have highlighted the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. “These points aren’t tied to any particular hotel chain or airline, which gives you a lot more freedom to find the best deal,” says Schulz.

In fact, as opposed to one branded by an airline or hotel company, a general travel card is great for people who value flexibility and aren’t necessarily loyal to a single brand, says Greg Karp, credit card expert at Nerdwallet.

Adds Ted Rossman, Senior Industry Analyst at CreditCards.com, “Just like you want to diversify your investments, it’s beneficial to keep your options open when it comes to travel rewards. If an airline or hotel chain cancels their points or miles, or if they don’t fly to your desired destination or have a conveniently located hotel, you have many other options and all of these cards offer solid sign-up bonuses and rewards on travel, dining and more.”

However, if you are loyal to a hotel chain or airline, these may be the best deal for you. And smart shopping expert Trae Bodge recommends choosing a card with a strong sign-up bonus. “You’ll probably hit the minimum threshold by buying your next squad while racking up a lot of miles. You can use those miles towards your next vacation,” says Bodge.
