Ambient Photonics breaks ground on first high-volume manufacturing facility of its kind for energy harvesting technology in California

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ambient Photonics today celebrated groundbreaking for its state-of-the-art, 43,000-square-foot low-light solar cell manufacturing facility in Scotts Valley, California — one of the largest factories of indoor low-light energy harvesting technologies in the world. The company’s recent $48.5 million Series A funding and accelerated factory construction schedule positions Ambient to meet high demand for its novel technology. Ambient’s high-power-density solar cells enable manufacturers of connected devices to reduce the carbon footprint of their products by up to 80 percent by eliminating single-use batteries.

Ambient also recently opened its new headquarters in Scotts Valley and plans to have over 100 full-time equivalents between locations by this time next year.

“The legacy of battery drain in consumer electronics has become an obstacle to realizing the dream of a connected IoT world. Ambient’s technology directly addresses the growing environmental impact of single-use batteries,” said Bates Marshall, CEO of Ambient. “The groundbreaking of the Scotts Valley facility is an important milestone as we demonstrate that both the US and California can lead the way in manufacturing decarbonization technologies for the world.”

Ambient’s Fab 1 manufacturing facility in Scotts Valley will house the first-ever fully automated production line for large volume indoor low-light solar cells, featuring state-of-the-art equipment from Manz AG, which also manufactures technology, automotive and e-mobility heavyweights worldwide. Ambient’s fully automated production system uses industrial printing processes to deposit its novel molecules onto thin, durable glass substrates. Custom cells are rapidly deployable for integration into electronic devices at a mass-scale price.

“Manz supplies the world’s largest manufacturing companies, and Ambient’s investment in our highly specialized production solutions demonstrates their commitment to high-volume, high-quality production,” said Martin Drasch, CEO of Manz AG. “We are excited to join Ambient on its journey of market innovation for smart homes and the Internet of Things.”

“We are very pleased to welcome Ambient Photonics to Scotts Valley. Ambient brings quality jobs with a good work-life balance to Santa Cruz County while avoiding the stressful congestion and unnecessary air pollution that come with commuting in Silicon Valley,” said Donna Lind, Mayor of Scotts Valley. “Sustainable living is fundamental to the health and well-being of our community. Ambient’s work to reduce waste and carbon emissions in our everyday devices is something we can all be proud of.”

Ambient expects to begin shipments from the new factory to high-volume consumer electronics and IoT customers in the first half of next year. Connected device manufacturers work with Ambient to not only improve product sustainability, but also to address Scope 3 emissions from their supply chains. With planned solar PV systems on rooftops and park canopies, Ambient’s manufacturing facility will also be powered by clean, renewable energy.

Ambient’s PV solar cells offer a breakthrough energy density, capable of harnessing photons from across the room light spectrum and powering a range of electronic devices. To learn more about endless power and energy harvesting for connected devices, download the Ambient Technology Brief here:
