Arteta on goals, Nelson, Saka and the atmosphere | press conference | news

Mikel Arteta had many positive things to talk about after our impressive 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The manager was asked about the goals, Reiss Nelson’s contribution, Bukayo Saka’s injury and the influence of the home fans.

Here’s a full transcript of the manager’s post-match press conference…

Whether Arteta made Partey look back on his goal against Tottenham…
He watched it this morning to be fair but it sure was a great goal, lifted his performance today to a level where he should be playing too.

In a special moment for Nelson, who scored a brace…
I think not just me but all his teammates and all the staff are so happy for him because he’s a kid that’s really changing, he’s really developing, he’s really maturing and he’s showing every day how much he wants it and today he had a chance and he did it very well because he helped us win the game.

About Saka’s injury and whether the World Cup is now in question…
Hopefully not, it was a bad kick from the start that he was limping, but that’s all I see, let’s see how it is in the next few days.

Where Saka sustained his injury…
I think both [leg & ankle] He was kicked a couple of times and found it awkward to continue.

On whether referees should give Saka more protection…
This is for you.

What this month has told him about the squad…
How lucky I am to have her with me and again especially when we lose or draw how united we are and how we react to that and today I think it was a really good example. We know the schedule that we’re facing now, that we’re going to face in January, it’s really, really demanding so we have to face it and we want to do it in the best possible way.

On the impact of fans at Emirates Stadium…
Huge, I don’t know the percentage if it’s 20%, 30% or 90%. It changes the team, the energy they produce, the support they give the team, especially in difficult moments as we already have some examples throughout the season is phenomenal. The guys are really looking forward to coming here and playing and they’re really enjoying it. And that’s a big advantage, I think.

On the reaction to last weekend’s draw and midweek loss to PSV…
Big teams need to react as quickly as possible and that’s what we did after Thursday night’s disappointment. If you don’t have time, go here Friday night. Half a training session and not just physically but mentally ready for another challenge against a side that have beaten Liverpool and the pressure is on you lose first place and there you are. And we have to get used to that

About winning with a big hit…
It was great, we certainly created chances and we didn’t hit the target enough. We talked about it all week and today obviously the individual talents made the difference, they scored some fantastic goals and shared goals which I also think is important.

Exactly what has changed for Nelson…
How mature, how focused he is in his job, how he speaks, how he reflects, how he respects the season, how he challenges everyone every day, he’s a happy kid. We all want him to be successful and do well and he really deserved what he did for the team today.

To Nelson giving him confidence after Saka’s injury…
We don’t know, first of all these are two different things. The fact that we have players who can contribute to winning games is really powerful. That’s what we need if you’re looking on the bench for players who can change the game and today he did it.
