Irvine & Dreghorn fend off challengers to their Borders Champion Band title in Hawick.
Irvine & Dreghorn Brass, conducted by Lewis Bettles, successfully defended their Champion Band title at the Borders Entertainment Contest.
Each of the contestants had to provide a 15-minute entertainment set for judges Martin Armstrong and Andrew Duncan and a supportive audience at Hawick High School.
Irvine & Dreghorn’s winning program combined the music of two of Scotland’s leading composers – Peter Graham and Alan Fernie, with the band opening with a choreographed presentation of ‘Drums of Thunder’ and ‘Celtic Dreams’ from Peter’s Windows of the World suite. They then moved on to Alan’s Three Scottish Dances, once again with excellent solo and section contributions.
The Best Soloist award went to Jedforest Instrumental trombonist Gordon Melrose for his outstanding rendition of “Stardust”. Selkirk Silver’s Colin Kemp deservedly accepted the Best Solo Cornet award, with the percussion award going to the outstanding team at St Ronan’s Silver.
A spokesman for the band told 4BR: “We are delighted to have retained the Champion Band title as everyone has worked so hard to achieve this success.
It was a great day of contest made even more memorable by the win and also by Fraser Kirk winning Best Instrumentalist and our basses winning their Section Award and claiming the Conduct and Entertainment awards.”
A SBBA spokesman from 4BR: “Our congratulations go to all the bands that took part and created a fantastic day of brass music in the town of Borders.”
