By failing Brittney Griner, we are failing all women in sports

Brittney Griner, an eight-time WNBA All-Star and Phoenix Mercury center, turned 32 last week. Instead of being able to celebrate with her friends and family, she spent her birthday in a Russian prison cell – just like the last 249 days.

On February 17, Griner was arrested at a Russian airport and accused of having vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage. On May 3, the US State Department declared her “unlawfully detained,” and on August 4, Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison on drug smuggling charges.

As Griner awaits her appeal hearing, which is scheduled to begin Oct. 25, she worries about being forgotten at home.
