Bethany Women’s Club does

Plans for various projects

BETHANY – The GFWCWV Bethany Woman’s Club met at Bethany Memorial Church on October 17, with President Helen Moren presiding and extending the reception.

Reports were given by Charlotte Chambers, Secretary, and the Treasurer’s Report by Moren.

Advocates for Children Week is celebrated with a donation to CASA, an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children. Halloween favors are being made for residents of two local nursing homes.

Members will work with local first responders on emergency child seat identification stickers. The November project involves cooking soup for veterans.

The club plans to participate in Wreaths Across America, with Judy Pyle serving as chairperson.

A Terri Lynn fundraiser continues.

It has been announced that the Southeastern Region Conference will be held October 27-30 in Lexington, Kentucky. The club entered a competition and took first place in the state. The report was based on education and will be submitted along with seven other states in competition at the regional meeting.

Free Diabetes Workshop November 5th at Morning Star Baptist Church

WEIRTON – Morning Star Baptist Church, located at 3124 Weir Ave., Weirton, is hosting a free diabetes workshop in celebration of November, National Diabetes Awareness Month.

The workshop takes place on November 5th from 10am to 1pm and includes a free packed lunch. Everyone is invited to participate and is asked to register by November 2nd by contacting BJ Bryant, the workshop chair, by phone at (304) 748-2320 or email at [email protected] .

The guest presenter is Amy Butts, Diabetes Educator, Physician Assistant, Endocrinology.

“Diabetes and You: Who’s the Boss?” will be the topic from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A brochure from the American Diabetes Association — “How to Thrive: A Guide to Your Journey with Diabetes” – will be provided. There will be information on the Medicate Part D savings model to help seniors afford insulin, and there will be discussion and hands-on experience with continuous glucose monitors and insulin delivery devices.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. is the topic “Flip the switch” with a testimonial from A1C and time/area monitoring presented by John and Joni Jackson.

A packed lunch is available from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m

Stuffed cabbage, pierogi sale

WEIRTON — A frozen uncooked cabbage roll and cheese and potato pierogi sale sponsored by St. Nicholas Orthodox Church runs through Nov. 14.

The cost is $20 for six cabbage rolls and $12 for a dozen pierogi. Orders can be placed by calling (304) 479-0196.

Scheduled order pickup is on November 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall, 604 Colliers Way, across the street from Weirton Medical Center.

Mount Zion Baptist Planning Community Thanksgiving Meal

STEUBENVILLE — Mount Zion Baptist Church at 221 N. Seventh St., Steubenville, will be the site of a congregational Thanksgiving celebration on November 6 at 1:00 p.m

All are welcome to participate in the free meal.

Volunteers and donations of food and money are being sought, according to organizer Tammy Gregory, who can be contacted at (740) 381-8525 or (740) 282-9244.

Thanksgiving dinner includes turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, bun, sweet potato pie and water, punch and apple cider.

Volunteers are needed as servers, but also for setup and cleaning.

‘Treasure Hunt’ Friday at

Mission Seventh Street Plaza

STEUBENVILLE — Bargain hunters are invited to a “Treasure Hunt” Sale for Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Urban Mission’s Seventh Street Plaza.

The sale is a take-what-you-need-pay-what-you-can sale, an Urban Thrift spokesman said.

Weirton United Way Turkey Trot is scheduled for November 19th

WEIRTON — The Weirton United Way Turkey Trot will be held on November 19 at Marland Heights Park, Weirton.

The fundraiser includes the 5K Run/Walk, Kids 1 Mile Fun Run and Toddler Dash. Registration forms are available from United Way or register online at Questions can be directed to Angela Myers, Race Coordinator at (304) 670-2148.

There will be a food drive benefiting the Salvation Army and the Fellowship Breadbasket.
