Elon News Network received two Pacemaker Awards from the Associated Collegiate Press during the National Student Media Conference in Washington, DC

Elon News Network won both a newspaper pacer and an Associated Collegiate Press first multiplatform pacer at the Fall National College Media Convention co-sponsored by ACP, the College Media Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Ten ENN students attended the October 26-30 conference in Washington, DC, along with Professor Anthony Hatcher, Chair of the Journalism Department, Associate Professor Rich Landesberg, and Assistant Professor Israel Balderas.

Avery Sloan ’25, Sophie Rosenthal ’23, Miranda Ferrante ’23, Chloe Franklin ’23 and Erin Martin ’25 were part of a team of Elon News Network students who traveled to the National College Media Convention in Washington, DC, where ENN won several organizational and individual awards.

The Pacemaker is the highest award presented by ACP for excellence in student journalism. The Pendulum, the Elon News Network newspaper, was one of 19 student publications to win the award, with a total of 88 entries.

Pacemaker entries will be judged based on reporting and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics. Additionally, according to the Associated Collegiate Press, the winning papers “took risks and served as a powerful voice for student audiences.”

This is the fifth time The Pendulum has won Newspaper pacemaker (2009, 2018, 2019, 2021). The pendulum passed newspapers November 10, 2021, February 16, 2022and April 27, 2022, edited by Nyah Phengsitthy ’23, for consideration.

Elon News Network was one of 11 winners of an inaugural multi-platform Pacemaker, an award designed to recognize how student media organizations use print, online, social media, and audio/video to serve their audiences.

The College Media Association and Associated Collegiate Press also honored individual Elon students in multiple categories. Below are the students who finished in the top three in a competition.

In addition, ENN was named a finalist for an Online Pacemaker, and Colonnades, the university’s arts and literature magazine, was a finalist for a Magazine Pacemaker.

  • Elon Local News staff won first place for Best Video Sportscast for its airing on March 28, 2022.
  • Elon Local News staff won first place for “Best Special Section: More than Four Pages” for “ENN: 2022 Sports Exclusive”.
  • The pendulum won second place for Best Special Section: More than Four Pages for the February 16, 2022 issue.
