Overwatch 2 loses another hero due to bugs.
Blizzard Entertainment is pulling Mei from Overwatch 2 for the next two weeks due to a bug in her skill kit. Blizzard’s customer service social media account confirmed the news, saying that Mei will be removed from the game until an upcoming patch releases her on November 15th added again.
The bug that caused Mei’s removal affected her Ice Wall ability, which allowed her to rise to unintended areas of the map. Once Mei finds herself in certain locations on a map, a Kiriko on her team can teleport across map boundaries and break out. She can then attack the opposing team from off-map completely unnoticed, or switch to other heroes. You can see the bug in this Reddit clip:
Mei is the third hero Overwatch 2 has disabled since its release. On October 10, the game removed Bastion from all game modes and Torbjorn from Competitive mode due to similar bugs in their skill kits. Both heroes were added just last week for the sequel’s Halloween event patch. Another hero to be handicapped so soon is a real blow to a game that’s already had a pretty rocky start.
Two weeks is a long time for Mei Mains to pull through, but it will feel a lot longer for players who are already tired of the sequel’s rigid new meta. Heroes like Zarya, Sombra, and Sojourn dominate game modes due to their overwhelming abilities, such that most of the recent Overwatch League 2022 playoff games have stuck to the exact same team composition with minor variations. Fans have been calling for buffs to weak heroes like Zenyatta and Doomfist and nerfs to the heroes above.
On November 15, her wishes are only partially fulfilled. Blizzard has previously announced that the November patch will deliver nerfs targeting Sombra, Genji, Zarya, D.va, and Kiriko. Sombra’s Hack ability will be tweaked to be less powerful, Genji’s maximum ammo and shuriken damage will be reduced, Zarya’s barriers will have longer cooldowns, and D.va’s booster damage will be lowered. Kiriko receives a very small nerf, reducing the invulnerability duration of her teleport ability by 0.15 seconds.
Unfortunately, there won’t be any nerfs targeting Sojourn – meaning ranked players will have to wait until major changes arrive in Season 2 to see a real change in the current meta.
