Envisics uses the Dynamic Holography Platform to enhance the AR head-up display

Q: We’re starting to see AR head-up displays in production cars. What makes Envisics’ technology different?

A: It’s great to see the use of AR-HUD continue to accelerate. To date, most companies developing holographic technologies for the automotive market have focused on the application of holographic optical elements in the form of a film that is laminated into the windshield. At Envisics we take a different approach. Whereas [holographic optical element] Systems use off-the-shelf projector components, we make our images by manipulating the speed of light. Our holograms are computed in real-time using the advanced computing power of our proprietary chip designs. Our approach enables OEMs to unlock both 3D images and true augmented reality.

When will Envisics technology be in production vehicles?

Our first generation technology has already been supplied to several Jaguar Land Rover vehicle lines. The second-generation technology will be rolled out in a vehicle line for a major OEM in 2023, and then other products from multiple OEMs.

Is Envisics’ technology similar to other advanced features that are becoming first appearing in high-end cars and then trickling down to less expensive models?

Yes, our R&D investments are focused on working with the leading OEMs to provide space and power efficient, lower cost versions of our technologies to enable mass market applications.

Can you talk about Envisics patented algorithms and high magnification designs and the benefits?

We have over 700 patents pending or issued in the fields of digital holography, algorithms and related technologies.

Our research and development is focused both on the application of our patented inventions and on advancing the science and mathematics that make true digital holography possible.

For our next product release, you will see the use of a sophisticated holographic engine that, in combination with our proprietary chipsets, will power dual-plane displays with augmented reality.

How difficult is it to make the technology automotive-ready and meet or exceed packaging and weight requirements?— And how do electric vehicles come into play? the?

The challenges of providing true digital holography suitable for automotive applications have always been at the heart of Envisics.

These challenges are not only to deliver best-in-class image quality to our customers, but also to meet increasingly stringent packaging, energy consumption and environmental requirements.

Of course, when it comes to EVs, energy consumption is a key concern for OEMs, and we are working on breakthroughs that will make AR-HUD increasingly attractive to efficiently and effectively deliver information to the driver.

Essentially, the breakthroughs needed for the widespread application of AR-HUD technologies will relate to package size, power consumption, and projection of information.
