Holland America Line’s new entertainment show, A Town by the Sea, takes guests on an immersive behind-the-scenes journey

The new storytelling event features seldom-seen locations on board and introduces the team members making it possible

SEATTLE, October 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Cruise ships are often referred to as floating cities. Traveling the world, all the functions of a coastal city must be fulfilled, and countless team members work together to keep each ship running smoothly. For the first time ever, Holland America Line is bringing this story to life in a captivating new show called A Town by the Sea.

A storytelling event on the ships’ world stage, “A City on the Sea,” lifts the curtain on cruise ship operations through immersive video footage and interviews. Presented with live narration from the ship’s cruise and tour guide – who is joined by other ship officers such as the captain and crew – behind closed doors, guests are taken on an enlightening and delightful journey, while also meeting the people who run the ships from Holland America Line call their home away from home.

“‘A City on the Sea’ is a unique take on a behind-the-scenes look, not only showing how our ships work, but also telling some amazing stories of the people who make it possible,” he said Michael Smith, Senior Vice President, Guest Experience and Product Development, Holland America Line. “We put a lot of thought into making this show a transformative moment, where the complexities of running a floating city becomes a celebration of the human spirit and all that we can achieve.”

A City on the Sea explores areas on board such as the engine room to show off the marvels of modern technology and the laundry room to see how thousands of laundry are processed every day. Guests explore a city’s staples such as bakeries, restaurants, theaters, grocery stores, and hardware stores without leaving the ship.

Engineers, medical staff, musicians and cabin attendants describe the challenges and opportunities of working on a cruise ship, while a captain talks about how he sees himself as mayor of the “city”. Guests will meet team members bound by decades of friendship and hear from a tailor whose family connection with Holland America Line spans generations.

“A City by the Sea” is a daytime presentation debuting on the historical stage 15 Oct Transatlantic voyage on board Rotterdam and will be offered on every cruise across the fleet from early 2023.
