Kansas City looks to welcome cannabis lounges in new entertainment district

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) – A day after voters legalized recreational marijuana in Missouri, a hospitality group announced a new entertainment district project in Kansas City that will include spaces for smoking cannabis freely.

Besa Hospitality Group of Gladstone, Mo., announced Wednesday, Nov. 9 that those living in the KC Metro Area and central Midwest will soon welcome a new entertainment district along the Missouri River. The concept includes:

  • A state-of-the-art amphitheater
  • Two indoor entertainment venues with capacities from 500 to 2,000 people
  • fairground
  • Food and Beverage Concepts
  • Corporate event spaces
  • wedding pages

BHG stated that the venues will feature local, regional and national shows and performances. Meanwhile, the amphitheater was designed as the main attraction for outstanding performers and entertainers.

BHG noted that the project is a shared vision with BesaMe Wellness, a medical marijuana supply company in Missouri. The multi-million dollar project is also appropriately named the Smokey River Entertainment District.

According to the group, Smokey River is located about 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City in the village of River Bend. The multi-purpose space will provide thousands of workspaces and host the biggest names in entertainment from music, comedy and art with amazing views and experiences.

Here’s the kicker, BHG said a unique feature of the project will allow for legal cannabis use in a select few venues.

“We have the opportunity to showcase cannabis and the acceptance of cannabis in our everyday lives. We normalize cannabis through hospitality,” said Joey Pintozzi, Vice President of Operations and Marketing. “This is primarily an entertainment venue. Cannabis is just part of that experience. People will be able to consume legally in some of the venues and enjoy being themselves.”

On Tuesday, state voters voted in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana by a majority of 53%.

“This is an incredible opportunity for ALL communities,” said Jack Mitchell, CEO of the Besa Group of Companies. “This facility is more than just an amphitheater and entertainment venues. She will help us develop the region’s music, hospitality, cannabis and cultural industries together.”

BHG stated that the project will be completed in two phases. The first, due to open in Spring 2023, will include the festival site, food and drink concepts and a 1,500-seat live music venue with options for corporate events of all sizes, weddings and more. The second, scheduled to open in spring 2024, will include the Smokey River Amphitheater, which will have a capacity of 14,000 for large shows.

The group noted that the amphitheater’s design will feature a raised bowl to integrate fans and performers. It will also have clear sight lines and dual-level VIP areas to provide guests with tailored experiences. The state-of-the-art stage will create unforgettable experiences.
