BOSTON- To gain momentum from their 72-63 season-opener win over Northeastern, the Boston University men’s basketball team meets a second squad of Huskys during a visit to UConn Friday night. Although Fox Sports 2 is scheduled to begin broadcasting at 6 p.m., fans can hear Doug Brown and Brian Maurer starting at 5:45 p.m

TERRIER PILLOW

  • BU are targeting their first 2-0 start since the 2013-14 season opened with victories over Northeastern and UMass Lowell.
  • A native of New Haven, Connecticut, graduate student Walter Why notched a personal-best six 3-pointers on Monday against the Huskies en route to a career-high 27 points and added a career-defining 13 rebounds for his 15th double-double. He currently ranks 19th all-time with 1,265 points, 35 points away from becoming the 15th terrier all-time to reach 1,300 points.
  • BU has two other Connecticut terriers in graduate school Jonas Harper (Stamford) and older Nevin Zinc (New city). Harper scored 15 points against Northeastern while Zink had seven rebounds.
  • Junior Miles Brewster celebrated his eighth career start and handed out his personal best with six assists.
  • The Terriers are now 13-0 since the start of the 2021-22 season when their bench outplays opponents and also 16-2 when they keep opponents under 45% shooting.

SCOUTING UCONN

  • The Huskies are earning votes in both the AP and Coaches national polls after winning 23-10 last season and reaching the first round of the NCAA tournament.
  • UConn is led by 6-foot-9 forward Adama Sanogo, Big East Preseason Player of the Year, who posted a career-high 30 points against Auburn last season. In an 85-54 win over Stonehill on Monday, he had 19 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes.
  • The Huskies have four transfers on their team, including 6-foot-4 guard Nahiem Alleyne, who averaged 9.6 ppg at Virginia Tech last season, and 6-foot-5 guard Tristen Newton, who returned in 2021 -22 in East Carolina averaged 17.7 ppg.
  • 6-foot-5 guard Jordan Hawkins was named the 2021-22 Big East All-Freshman after averaging 5.8 ppg last season.
  • UConn features a 7-foot-2 freshman Donovan Clingan, who had nine points and seven rebounds in just 18 minutes against Stonehill.

SERIES HISTORY

  • UConn owns a 44-12 advantage in an all-time streak dating back to 1930, but is only facing BU for the sixth time since a 1990 NCAA 1st Rd. match. Both programs were members of the Yankee Conference in the mid-1970s.
  • Coach Jones is 3-0 with the Terriers and most recently lost to the Huskies in 2017 (85-66) after losing 51-49 in 2016 and 77-60 in 2013.
  • BU last beat UConn at home in 1986 in Jim Calhoun’s first season.

NEXT

  • BU will open a home stand with two games against Johnson & Wales on Monday (November 14) at 7pm
  • It will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
