Oklahoma State Plunges, USA TODAY’s Athletic Coaches Survey Top Sees Little Movement

The top eight in the US TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll remained the same as a week ago. Georgia continues to lead, with Ohio State, Tennessee and Michigan rounding out the top 4. Clemson and Alabama are at No. 5 and No. 6.

TCU is still the top-ranked Big 12 team, but behind them there was plenty of movement from their conference opponents. After dominating Oklahoma State, the Kansas State Wildcats jumped from 22nd place to 14th place. This week’s biggest falls include Oklahoma State and Wake Forest, both of whom dropped nine places. Mike Gundy’s Cowboys are now number 18.

UCF joined fellow American Athletic Conference member Tulane in this week’s rankings. Although they will soon be a Big 12 team, being ranked as a member of the Group of Five is always impressive.

The independent Liberty Flames also entered the rankings at No. 24. They are the only independent team in the top 25.

Cincinnati and South Carolina dropped out of the poll after their ninth-week losses. It’s easy to wonder if the Bearcats were last ranked as a member of the American Athletic Conference in the Coaches Poll.

Voters were friendly to Penn State. The Nittany Lions fell just three spots after losing to Ohio State, but some of the voters were outside the top 25.

Things are going badly in Lexington, Kentucky. Just a month ago, the Wildcats were #8 in the coaches’ poll. Now they’ve lost three of their last four, dropping to 24th place.

The Sooners are still not getting votes, and they shouldn’t be at this point in the season. However, if they beat Baylor this week, maybe we can talk about that.
