Pertamina aims to decarbonize companies to fight climate change

“We have two options for dealing with climate change: First, we must decarbonize our carbon assets and our business,” said Daniel S. Purba, Pertamina’s senior vice president of strategy and investment.

He made the statement during a discussion at the Indonesia pavilion on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Friday (November 11, 2022).

To decarbonize its business, Pertamina has begun to transform its business portfolio by promoting low-carbon, new and renewable energy in its existing stores and operations, Purba said.

“Since it is still economically expensive to introduce the use of renewable energies, the market is not really ready for it. However, for Pertamina we started with our own companies. We can’t wait for the market to be ready immediately, but we’ve started our own operations,” he said.

The company’s second action to mitigate climate change includes the development of new green energy-related businesses with a range of targets for biofuels; Hydrogen; carbon capture, utilization and storage; renewable energy; batteries and electric vehicles; and also the carbon business.

Therefore, even as the carbon business is reduced and the company has started to decarbonize its business, the company’s revenue will continue to flow, Daniel explained.

To meet its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2060, Pertamina will reduce its carbon emissions by almost 30 million tons by 2030 and reduce approximately 30 to 40 million tons of carbon per year by 2060. For this, the company must start carbon absorption reduction measures immediately.

In fact, between 2010 and 2021, Pertamina managed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29.09 percent.

“These two main avenues that we have in our climate protection roadmap for the coming years are to implement some well-prepared, detailed and clear programs and strong initiatives in our businesses. So, not only are we looking at our current carbon businesses, but we’re also starting to look at new and renewable energy businesses,” Purba said.

He went on to say that Pertamina’s asset decarbonization roadmap will be implemented in each of its businesses, starting with upstream, refining and petrochemicals, oil, trade and commerce, gas production, integrated marine logistics and new renewable energy-based power plants.

“Hundreds of programs are behind this roadmap scheme, and each of our businesses has committed to using it,” he added.

To ensure that the commitment to decarbonization is implemented in all business areas, Pertamina has included the commitment target in the key performance indicators of each business unit.

“So if you don’t meet the target, it will affect your income. This is to ensure that all parties work very hard and are committed to achieving the goal,” Purba said.

Besides the oil and gas business, Pertamina is also developing the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia by not only manufacturing batteries but also taking care of all supply chain companies in the electric vehicle ecosystem.
