Renesas presents Wi-Fi roadmap based on technology from Celeno acquisition

MUNICH & TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE). Renesas completed the acquisition of Celeno last year and uses this technology to address a wide range of Wi-Fi client and access point applications for Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7.

Today, Renesas is delivering production volumes of high-performance Wi-Fi 6E access point solutions with its CL8000 family.

Renesas is also sampling a high-performance, highly integrated 2×2 Wi-Fi/BLE combo chip that offers switchable Wi-Fi 6E tri-band radios (6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz), 160 MHz channel bandwidth, and up to 2.4 Gbps Data transfer speed supported. The new low-latency, highly secure chipset includes Bluetooth and BLE 5.2 support, targeting multimedia streaming applications, IoT gateways and cloud-connected devices.

Renesas is also developing a Wi-Fi 6E chipset with unique, patented Wi-Fi Doppler imaging technology. This Wi-Fi radar technology shows the range and Doppler signature of people and objects using standard Wi-Fi signals. It eliminates the need for multiple cameras or sensors in homes and commercial buildings. For example, it can be used to detect the presence and location of people in a room in order to redirect and optimize air conditioning airflows, thereby saving on energy costs. Another example could be intrusion detection in secured facilities or connected cameras with motion detection to activate the camera. Production of the combined connectivity and sensor chip is currently planned for the next 18 months.

Also known as Extremely High Throughput (EHT), Wi-Fi 7 delivers significantly faster throughput by using faster modulations and doubling the bandwidth. In the 6 GHz band, Wi-Fi 7 would more than double the maximum speed and increase speeds in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands by up to 30 percent. More importantly, some standout features of Wi-Fi 7 will improve network reliability, latency, and user experience. For example, by providing multi-link operation, devices would monitor multiple links across different bands and provide consolidated operation to optimize interference and avoidance of retransmissions. Users benefit from more reliable networks and lower and more predictable latency. Wi-Fi 7 is expected to arrive in 2024 with early adoption in cell phones, computers, and networking devices. Broader adoption in IoT, industrial, and consumer multimedia applications will follow.

Renesas Wi-Fi 7 offerings include solutions for home networking, IoT, industrial and consumer multimedia devices.

Meanwhile, the flourishing of new forms of Wi-Fi value-added services such as Wi-Fi motion detection and the rollout of Wi-Fi 7 access points will accelerate after protocols are standardized in 2024, and only two years later, most 6th GHz enabled access point shipments will support Wi-Fi 7.”

Winning Combinations

Renesas offers numerous winning combinations that combine Wi-Fi 6 and 6E chipsets integrated with a wide range of Renesas solutions including embedded processing, analog, power, timing and connectivity products. These technically validated winning combinations span applications from a high-throughput Wi-Fi 6 router for home gateways to an IEEE 1588 wireless solution for 5G networks. Other winning combinations with Wi-Fi 6 are in development, including a video IP phone, a smart home security terminal, and the addition of a Wi-Fi 6 USB stick to the Renesas Quick-Connect IoT platform, allowing users to be able to quickly build prototypes.

In addition, a new Quick-Connect Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2 module is released for IoT applications that require a high-performance, high-bandwidth 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi 6 client. This fully integrated, RF qualified module features a flexible footprint with PCIe and USB interfaces, saving development time and streamlining procurement for faster time to market.
