Decision 2022: Election results here in Virginia
The political picture takes shape as the election results roll in overnight.
Across the country, every faction claims important victories, including here at home.
In a closely watched race, Democratic Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger claims victory. She narrowly stayed in place, defeating Republican Yesli Vega.
Donald McEachin wins re-election in Virginia’s fourth congressional district, which now includes all of Richmond, parts of Henrico and parts of Chesterfield, and the Tri-Cities.
The incumbent Democrat was challenged by Republican candidate Leon Benjamin for the House seat.
Here’s a look at other breeds across Virginia
Rob Whittman will take his place in the 1st District. Incumbent – batting Democratic nominee Herbert Jones and Independent nominee David Foster.
In District 10, near Northern Virginia, incumbent Democrat Jennifer Wexton holds her seat with her victory over Republican Hung Cao.
This is Wexton’s second convention win.
Finally, Jen Kiggans flips the blue seat in District 2 when she defeats incumbent Representative Elaine Luria. That seat is one of many Republicans who had hoped to turn around to regain control of Congress.
Congressional control too close
Right now, control of the US Congress is uncertain, but we do know that Democrats appear to have dodged a “red wave.”
Heading into these midterm elections, Democrats controlled both chambers, with the Senate essentially having Vice President Kamala Harris’ game-changing vote to swing things blue.
So far this half, the Republicans have won eight seats and the Democrats three. Whichever party gets to 218 will take control.
John Randolph Medical Center becomes TriCities Hospital
A name change is pending for Hopewell Hospital.
By December 14, the name “John Randolph Medical Center” will disappear.
In its place is the TriCities Hospital.
HCA hasn’t said why it decided to drop “John Randolph.” The new name was said to be more inclusive and reflect the company’s values.
Nicole sets her sights on the Florida coast
Hurricane warnings are in effect for much of Florida’s east coast.
Nicole is expected to continue strengthening before going ashore. It could be the first hurricane to hit the United States in November in nearly 40 years.
Here in central Virginia, remains of Nicole will bring heavy rain on Friday.
Heavy rain could cause some local flooding in central VA, particularly in areas with poor drainage. The rain is expected to start early Friday and continue back and forth into the evening.
What about today’s forecast?
Dry weather continues for a few more days, then Nicole will bring beneficial rain on Friday.
Today will be a mostly sunny day with highs in the low 60’s.
