NOTTINGHAM, Pa., Oct. 25, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Returning by popular demand, Pennsylvania-based Herr’s, the nation’s largest family-owned snack food maker, today announced the return of its Flavored by Philly competition. For the second annual competition, Herr’s is turning things back over to its fans to submit flavor ideas — since nobody knows the flavors of Philadelphia better than Philadelphians — but this year there’s a new, exciting twist. The local snack company celebrates small businesses in the Philadelphia area of the five-county region with its Flavored by Philly Local Eats contest, inviting fans to submit a favorite local small business flavor to be designated as Herr’s Next Big Flavor of Chips.

Over seven decades ago, Herr’s began as a small company and has grown into a popular Philadelphia snack brand with roots in the city of brotherly love as the chip that’s there for every afternoon, park picnic or tailgate. Herr’s community roots run deep—and to support other local small businesses, Herr’s partners with small food businesses and local restaurants in Philly to bring the city their next favorite flavor of chips.

You name the place, Herr’s will make the taste. From now through November 15, Herr’s fans can submit their best chip flavor idea inspired by a small food company or local Philadelphia-area restaurant for a grand prize of $5,000 and a year’s supply of Herr’s and $10,000 up for grabs for the nominated small business. A small business owner can nominate a flavor idea themselves, but they are only eligible to win the $10,000 for the winning flavor.

After the Flavor Contest submission deadline, flavor ideas will be reviewed and entries will be narrowed down by a panel of judges to three small business flavor finalists – including Philadelphia native and celebrity chef Jen Carroll, a former Bravo top chef Finalist and All Star. The three crowdsourced finalists for chip flavors will launch in early summer 2023. Fans will once again have the chance to try all three flavors and vote for their favorite to determine the winning chip flavor, which was inspired by a small food business or a local Philadelphia restaurant.

“Herr’s has been deeply rooted in the Philadelphia community since my father started the company as a small business in 1946, and today stands as the most popular chip in the city’s hometown,” said Ed Herr, Herr’s chairman and CEO. “As the second Flavored by Philly competition begins, we are proud to support and recognize other small Philly businesses that started the way our family’s business began. We’re also excited to see which chip flavors inspired by small Philadelphia food companies and local restaurants will have our fans entering the competition.”
