Here’s what you need to know about each of these search types.

Name Availability Search

Your company incorporation papers will be rejected if your company name is too similar to the names of existing business entities in Missouri. To avoid this, use the name availability search to confirm your company name is available before submitting any documents. To search, select “Name Availability” from the drop down menu, fill in the search field with the company name you wish to use and click the “Search” button.

Search by name

You can also search for a company by name. Using this search tool will give you the names of registered companies as well as the names of companies that have registered a fictitious name with the state. You can also know the status of these companies.

For each search result, the database can display:

  • Type of business entity (domestic or foreign)
  • creation date
  • Status (Active or Inactive)
  • Registered agent name
  • charter number
  • company name
  • The owner of a fictional company name

Business name searches are useful for finding out if a company does business in the state and the name of its registered agent. It’s also useful if you want to know who is behind a company that uses a DBA.

If you are starting a business, the company name search will also show you if there are any companies using a fictitious name that matches your desired name. Although fictitious name filings don’t give business owners exclusive rights to a name, you probably don’t want to use the same name as a close competitor.

Search for the registered agent’s name

The Registered Agent is the person or entity designated as the Company’s official contact for governmental matters, tax purposes or other legal communications. You can search the database for agents, organizations and the companies they represent. You can further refine the search using the Agent is Individual or Agent is Organization options as shown in the image below.

Search by charter number

The Charter Number is a unique code assigned by the Missouri Secretary of State to corporations, limited liability companies (LLCs), and other business entities. It is used by the state to keep track of companies. You can find out the details of a company by searching for the incorporation number on the website.
