NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. – Record-breaking junior Kami Ward scored all four goals for Oak Glen as the still-undefeated, top-seeded Golden Bears won their sixth straight WVSSAC Region 1, Section 1 championship with a 4-2 win over No. 2 on Saturday Seed Weir High.

Ward now has a school record 55 goals this season for Oak Glen, which is 20-0-2 on the season. The 20 victories are also a program record.

“First of all, congratulations to Weir. They’ve had a fantastic season and I expect they’ll be back at full strength next season.” said Bill Watts, Oak Glen head coach. “As far as our girls go, I am beyond proud of this team. Between last year’s grads and this year’s injuries, we had to replace seven starters from last year’s section champion team.

“For this group to achieve everything they have this season is just incredible. They played as a team all season and it paid off (Saturday).”

Weir and Oak Glen also met in the OVAC Finals and the regular season, with the three games decided by a total of four goals and a penalty shootout.

Olivia Baker and Madelyn Cramer scored as the Red Riders finished their strong season 13-5-2.

They will lose a strong senior class whose Red Rider career came to an end on Saturday.

“Our seniors, led by Captains Reagan Hoover, Sophia Aperfine, Lindsey Fayak and Ava Taylor, were instrumental in our good season.” said Weir head coach Jeremy Angelo. “Defenders Elena Mastrantoni, Maddie Miralrio and Kiara Palavis helped anchor our good defense and midfielder Callie Wood supported a midfield that enjoyed owning the ball and creating scoring chances. This group of seniors was a sophomore coming to terms with the tragic death of Madison Crowe two years ago. The team dedicated our season to her and this group definitely had to go through a lot on and off the pitch to keep playing and doing well.

“This group did it with a heavy heart but they did a great job negotiating everything. They will be missed and thoughts and prayers go out to each of them in all they do going forward.”

Oak Glen received two assists from Carson Barr and one from Aaliyah Siegel, while Alexus Greenlief made 13 saves at the net.

Lexie Fayak had an assist for Weir while Rayna Hoover made eight saves.

The Golden Bears host the WVSSAC Region 1 championship game on Thursday, taking on Fairmont Senior, who won Section 2 12-5-4.
