US Senator Susan Collins received the Guardian of Small Business Award from the National Federation of Independent Business, the nation’s largest small business association, for her “commitment to job creation.”

“Small businesses are the job creation engines that power our economy and employ nearly half of America’s private sector workers,” Collins said in a press release. “From the high streets of downtown to the rural parts of our state, small businesses energize communities and support families. Throughout my Senate tenure, I have championed policies that help small businesses start, grow and thrive, and I am honored to receive this recognition from the NFIB.”

“The NFIB Guardian of Small Business Award is presented to Senators who have proven themselves to be true advocates for small business,” said NFIB President and CEO Brad Close. “At this convention, small businesses have emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic but constantly face the threat of high inflation, labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. These NFIB Guardians demonstrated strong support for small businesses on key issues. The NFIB is unique in that we only represent small and independent companies and our members determine our political positions. We are proud to recognize the 117th Congressional elected officials who earned this honor by accepting small business votes, supporting an extension of the Paycheck Protection Program, opposing tax increases and new mandates that will disrupt the economic recovery of would have endangered Main Street. NFIB commends Senator Collins for appointment to Guardian of Small Business.”

In 2020, Collins co-authored the Paycheck Protection Program to help small employers stay afloat and keep paying their workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Maine, small businesses received more than 47,000 forgivable loans totaling $3.2 billion, supporting hundreds of thousands of Maine jobs.

The Guardian of Small Business is the NFIB’s most prestigious award. It’s reserved for lawmakers who vote in support of important issues that matter to small business owners.
