Sunday News and Notes under the Pillow – BladenOnline

By Sonny Jones

A volleyball season ends and a new one begins. The sports world never slows down.

The high school volleyball season ended on Saturday with East Bladen’s heartbreaking loss to Washington in the first round of the NC High School Athletic Association playoffs.

The middle school volleyball season begins Monday with games in Bladenboro, Elizabethtown and West Columbus. Clarkton School of Discovery will participate in games at Bladenboro Middle. Tar Heel will play in games at West Columbus Middle. The games are scheduled for Monday and Thursday.

Saturday couldn’t have gone better for the North Carolina soccer team. Without playing, the Tar Heels likely won the ACC Coastal Division title. UNC is 3-0 in the conference while the other six teams have at least two losses each. UNC has five regular season games left, starting at home against Pittsburgh on Saturday night.

Could the tar heels win the ACC championship game, finish 12-1 and still not be selected for the college football playoffs? Yes, it certainly could, but that’s a long way off.

Scary Thought: High school basketball practice officially begins on Halloween (October 31). Games can be played starting November 18th.

Looks like an Astros Phillies world series. Did you have that at the start of the postseason? Astros maybe, but not the Phillies. The match-up could be finalized by the end of today.
