Calumet High School volleyball standout Helen Beiring will join the Northern Michigan University team next year. Beiring recently surpassed 1,000 career kills for the Copper Kings. She set a new school record with 40 kills in a match in Calumet’s five-set win over Elk Rapids in Thursday’s state tournament regional finals.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team ended its season yesterday with a very narrow 3-1 loss (25-20, 21-25, 25-27, 24-26) to top seed Ferris State in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament . Northern Michigan lost 3-2 to Grand Valley in the other semifinal. The Bulldogs and Lakers are playing for the title today.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opened its season yesterday with a 63-32 win over William Jewell College in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Challenge in Liberty, Missouri. Isabella Lenz led a balanced attack by the Huskies by 12 points. Tech meets Lewis University this afternoon.

The Northern women’s team beat Lewis 77-59 last night and will face William Jewell tonight.

The men’s GLIAC/GLVC crossover will be held at the SDC this weekend. Tech meets Lewis today at 2pm and McKendree University tomorrow at 2pm. Northern plays McKendree at noon today and Lewis at noon tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team started their season last night with an 84-76 win over Beloit College. Ilrick Higgins-Moise led the Lions with 25 points. Finlandia is leaving for Northland College tomorrow.

The Michigan Tech Football Team ends its season today at Saginaw Valley State.

The Tech hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Lake Superior State last night. The Lakers earned the extra ranking point from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in a shootout. Ryland Mosley was credited with the Huskies’ first goal after his shot was accidentally deflected into the net by a Lakers defender. Jed Pietila scored his first collegiate goal. Blake Pietila made 19 saves as Tech passed LSSU 42-21. These teams skate again tonight at 6:07 am at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Northern Michigan beat Bemidji State 2-0 last night. These teams are skating again in Bemidji tonight.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 5-1 at Aurora University last night. Those teams are back skating in Illinois today.

The Finlandia women’s team lost 10-0 to Aurora last night. These teams meet again today at 4:00 am at the Houghton County Arena.

The Portage Lake Pioneers lost 6-5 in overtime to the Mosinee Papermakers last night. The Pioneers visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings are visiting the Kings tonight. Coverage begins at 10:15 am on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pistons lost to the Knicks 121-112 last night. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 25 points. Cade Cunningham missed the game with a sore shin.
