The application of AI technologies in STEM education

Multiple AI technologies such as intelligence teaching, automated assessment, data mining, and learning analytics have been used in STEM education to improve teaching and learning quality. However, the application of AI in STEM education faces the challenge of integrating diverse AI techniques into the complex educational contexts.

Because from a systems perspective, STEM education is a complex system consisting of interdependent elements including subject, information, medium and environment. The application of AI as a critical technology element should carefully consider these complex factors to achieve quality STEM education.

Increasing trend of AI applications in STEM education

Based on a general systems theory (GST) framework, we reviewed the empirical AI-STEM studies from 2011 to 2021. Specifically, we have examined the various elements including AI technology, subject, information, medium and environment in the KI-STEM system, and the pedagogical and technological implications of AI in STEM education.

We have noticed a gradually increasing trend of AI applications in STEM education over the last decade. In addition, six categories of AI applications were localized, namely, learning prediction, intelligent tutoring system, student behavior detection, automation, learning robot and others (e.g. AI textbook, group building).

We further revealed the distribution relationships of the AI ​​application categories with other elements (e.g. information, subject, medium, environment) in the KI-STEM system to provide a holistic understanding of the application and integration of AI technologies in the STEM educational contexts to get.

The potential of AI technology for STEM

In addition, the AI ​​applications are useful for boosting students’ learning performance, motivation and cognitive thinking in STEM education. Furthermore, most of the reviewed articles reported good efficiency and algorithm accuracy in applying AI in STEM education.

Overall, the potential of AI technology to improve STEM education should be further explored along with studies investigating the integration of technology and education system.
