USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll puts Penn State back in top 10 after Week 12

Penn State is back in the top 10 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after breaking away at Rutgers for a one-sided win on the road and losing two teams ahead of them in Week 12. The Nittany Lions could be in a good place to start in to slip a New Years Six Bowl game.

Penn State moved up to No. 10 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, up two places from last week’s poll when Penn State was No. 12. Penn State capitalized on losses to No. 11 Tennessee (down six places) and No. 14 Utah (down four) this weekend. Blown out on the road by South Carolina, Tennessee gave up 63 points in the playoffs that destroyed the Vols. Utah came up short on the road in a close fight in Oregon. Oregon moved up four spots with the win and slipped one spot ahead of Penn State in 9th place in the coaches’ poll.

Georgia remains the nation’s runaway No. 1 team with 59 votes in first place after their away win in Kentucky in Week 12. Following the defending champions are the top two Big Ten heavyweights, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan. Michigan actually has a first vote more than Ohio State (2-1 advantage), even though Ohio State is ahead of the Wolverines. Ohio State and Michigan will go head-to-head in the Big Ten regular season finals this weekend to determine which team will play for the Big Ten championship.

Though the Big Ten now has three teams in the top 10 in the Coaches Poll, that’s all the Big Ten has to represent in this week’s updated poll. Iowa, Illinois, and Purdue are all in the “Other receiving votes” category.
