Walmart started rolling out Black Friday deals earlier this year. One of the hottest deals is Gateway’s 14.1-inch ultra-slim notebook — which originally cost $229 — for $99. It’s definitely not high-end, but if you’re looking for an insanely cheap non-essential laptop, now is the time to buy. Give it to an intern. Or do you have it as a backup. Or use it as a disposable item. Either way, it’s a bargain.

2 – Zoom adds email and calendaring capabilities to rival other workspace platforms.

Zoom recently announced that it plans to introduce new features like calendaring and email to compete with platforms like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. The new features allow users to connect to their third-party calendar and email services right on their desktop through the Zoom app. (Source: Engadget)

I wish that instead of spending its resources trying to keep up with Microsoft and Google as its office collaboration system (which will never happen), Zoom would specifically double down on its video conferencing technology and continue to make it the best and most affordable out there. Microsoft and Google have many other applications and investments to attend to. Given its brand and reputation, Zoom has the potential to be a leader in its specific niche if the company only focuses on that niche. This would benefit many small businesses like mine that like the platform.

3 – For Windows 8, the end is near.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system will soon no longer receive support from vendors. Microsoft said it has no plans to provide an end-of-life program for Windows 8.1, and Google said Chrome will also end support for Windows 7 and 8.1 early next year. Firefox hasn’t released any information about how it intends to handle the operating system, but other vendors like Opatch will continue to develop micropatches for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 over the next two years, but not for 8.1. If you’re one of those people still clinging to Windows 8, it’s time to move on. The main reason is security. As of this writing, millions of malware bots are looking for legacy operating systems like yours to infect and invade. Update your hardware and update your operating systems. And be glad you’ve been prolonging your use of Windows 8 for as long as you have. Well done. Now let it go

4 – Gmail’s new interface is here to stay.

Starting this month, Gmail will start moving everyone to what the company is calling its “integrated view.” With the new interface, users have options to access Meet, Spaces, Chat, and Mail when navigating the sidebar on the far left of the interface. (Source: The Edge)

Google began testing the new layout earlier this year and originally gave users the option to opt out. Going forward, users will no longer have the option to go back to the previous Gmail interface. Like it or not, it’s the reality going forward.

Online marketing tools like Constant Contact and MailChimp always seem to grab the attention. But AWeber has been around for years and I have many clients who enjoy using their service. The company applies a higher level of service to its platform instead of just letting its users figure things out. And it arguably offers more online marketing tools for the price. Sure, you can check out the bigger players, but if you’re looking for online marketing platforms, I suggest checking out these as well.
