World Cup 2022 Expert Predictions: How Far Will USMNT Go?

With the United States men’s national team returning to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in eight years, expectations are high for what is arguably the richest generation of young talent the country has ever produced. But what does a successful tournament actually look like for Gregg Berhalter’s team?

We put that question to our World Cup analysts here at FOX Sports. Here’s what they said.

What does success look like for the USMNT? How far do you think they will get in the tournament?

Stu Holden: Quarterfinals and Round of 16.

Landon Donovan: For us, getting out of the group is still the measure of success and I believe we’re going to get out of the group.

Carli Lloyd: If the USMNT can win their first game against Wales it will be the determining factor if they make it out of their group. They need a win to start the tournament and gain confidence to face England next. I think they can manage to get out of their group and reach the round of 16. It will be up to them how well they play together and if they believe in their hearts that they can go far.

Ali Wagner: I think success comes in the round of 16 and I think that’s where they get there. Assuming the Netherlands finishes first in their group, it’s possible that they can get past the Netherlands, but it’s a really big challenge, so I think they’re far away in the round of 16.

Chad Ochocinco: Success for me is that the USMNT comes out of their group. They have a competitive group but I think USA will do it.

Alexi Lalas talks about expectations for the USMNT

FOX Sports Soccer Analyst Alexi Lalas joins Craig Carton to preview the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Lalas takes a look at USA vs Wales and what we can expect from the young USA men’s team.

Doug McIntyre: Four years after not qualifying at all, the bare minimum – leaving the group – had to be counted as a success. I’m not sure even the most optimistic American fan expects the USA to lead a quartet that includes England (although the USMNT did just that in 2010) and that they would be a distinct underdog in a potential round of 16 match against the Netherlands would be. For a US team that hasn’t won a KO game in 20 years, beating anyone in the second round would be not just a success, it would be a triumph.

Martin Rogers: As always – get out of the group. A run to the round of 16 or better would set things up nicely for 2026.

Kelly Smith: With a young but talented roster, the USMNT is building up and they are likely to find real success at the next World Cup. Group B is tough but they should have the quality to get out of there; Anything beyond the round of 16 will probably be counted as a real success.

Moritz Ed: I’m an optimist and optimistic about this group and I think a quarter-final is possible. It starts with dropping out of the group, and the confidence that comes with it gives this team the belief that they can beat anyone.

Eniola Aluko: Success for the USMNT is the Quarterfinals. England, Wales and Iran are a tough group and I think USA need to get a good result against Wales to have any chance of getting out of the group. If they can do it and reach the quarterfinals, I think that’s a big achievement.

Warren Barton: I think for them it has to be at least in the last 16. It’s potentially a tough group but I think if they play it right they’re more than capable of beating everyone but England! I think they have the skills to do it very well.
